Antique blanked chest

Or: how an antique blanket chest turns into a 21st-century design object.

This beautiful object is a red painted blanket chest with 2 flower panels. It is made in Thuringen and dated 1881. Originally the top also showed a similar painting; however, this one has worn off. The contours of the painted flower panels can still be seen in the photos of the top of the chest. It is known that blanket chests were also used as seating furniture in the 19th and 20th centuries. After storage, a new functionality soon followed for the blanket chest.

Around the next turn of the century, this chest was given another function: the object was adapted to serve as TV furniture. The front panel now has a tipping function, which means that you can not only enter the box via the lid, but also from the front. The so-called scent compartment, a compartment in the cupboard in which scented objects were placed, has made way for a plank floor. The box is currently in use as a storage and coffee table.

We have largely disassembled the box and reassembled it to ensure sturdiness. The box has also been well cleaned and fitted with new dropout chains. Although you could say that it is a pity that the box is no longer in its original condition, I mainly see the history of how the object remains of use and decorative value over the centuries.

Height: 54 cm, depth: 61.5 cm, width box: 115 cm, width lid: 122 cm.
