Antique bird cage

This antique double wooden birdcage with floral motifs was made around 1900. The style is also called ‘Victorian’, after the artistic production during the reign of the British Queen Victoria between 1837 and 1901, which is characterized by lavish decoration and bright colours.

The bright blue was the big surprise during the restoration process. When cleaning the cage, a small speck of light blue emerged: it was not a (paint) stain, but the cage itself turned out to be heavily covered with dirt.

There are two clues that suggest that real birds have lived in it: the iron plate that used to be at the bottom of the cage is missing (it must have gotten too dirty) and the fact that it came with a hand-blown drinking bowl that unfortunately got lost during cleaning.

Length x width: 71 x 22 cm (base), height: 86.5 cm.
